Syracuse basketball gets OT win over Georgetown after big 2nd-half comeback
Washington -- This is how two old rivals are supposed to play against each other.
The Syracuse Orange and Georgetown Hoyas may not have been able to win any beauty contests with their play on Saturday, but the intensity and emotions on display at the Capital One Arena brought back memories of the rivalry's 1980s heydays.
The sight of Jim Boeheim in front of the Syracuse bench with former Hoyas legend Patrick Ewing stalking the opposing sideline made for a sight that former Georgetown coach John Thompson, who watched the game from his customary baseline seat, had to appreciate.
And the story of this chapter in the rivalry's history will be Syracuse's improbable comeback from a 13-point second-half deficit for an 86-79 overtime win over the Hoyas.
Syracuse improved to 9-1 on the season and ruined Georgetown's previously perfect record. The Hoyas, who had won their first eight games against the country's easiest schedule, fell to 8-1.
The Georgetown fans were celebrating as the Hoyas forged a 53-40 lead with 10 minutes left in the game, but those same fans were standing in stunned silence as the Orange staged its comeback.
The Orange rallied to within five points on Tyus Battle's 3-pointer with 4 minutes left in the game.
